  • Year 6 Whitby Experience

    Mon 17 Oct 2022

Y6 Hummingbirds, along with Year 6 from Bourne Elsea Park, visited YHA Whitby in Whitby for their 4-day residential from the 17th – 20th October.

On Monday morning, the children arrived early at school excited about the adventure that awaited them. After travelling by coach, everyone was ready to get stuck into their first activity – a trail around Whitby town. During this walk the children saw many famous sights of Whitby including the 199 steps, the James Cook statue and the Whitby whale bones. Some were lucky to see dolphins at the end of the pier.

Each group completed a range of activities including a trip to Whitby Museum, where we had the chance to see the infamous ‘hand of glory’ (a mummified hand that cast spells on sleeping owners, whilst burglars stole their belongings) and a range of fossils and historical collections, including a 100,000-year-old crocodile. We also visited a life size replica of Captain Cook’s ship, ‘The Endeavour’ and had lunch atop the deck. We felt like celebrities as we had the ship to ourselves.

Year 6 were also extremely lucky to take part in a jet polishing workshop and listen to a jet specialist talk about the history of jet and why it is so important to Whitby. The children took their time to polish their own piece of fossilised wood and turn it into a sparkling smooth gem. We also got to see the largest piece of Whitby jet in the world; it was a massive 21 feet long!

The highlights of the visit definitely included fossil hunting, jet polishing and a wonderful coastal walk. The walk and fossil hunting tested the children’s perseverance and patience as they combed the sand looking for fossils. Everyone found a treasure to take home with them including ammonites, sea glass and belemnites. The children enjoyed their time on the beach, where they ate chips and played in the sand.

On their final day, Year 6 had the opportunity to visit an English Heritage site – Whitby Abbey. Despite the weather, they had a fantastic time exploring this historical monument.

The children showed fantastic perseverance, friendship, kindness, and teamwork throughout the week. All the staff who attended are proud of all the children; it will definitely be a visit that made lasting memories. It was wonderful to see new-found friendships being formed with the children from both schools.

  • Sensational Celebration of Harvest

    Wed 12 Oct 2022

Today saw the return of our Harvest Festival in church. Children from Year 1 to 6 worked hard to showcase their God Given Talents in order to share the meaning of harvest with friends and family. It was a joy to celebrate in a variety of new and exciting ways which embodied our Christian Value of Creativity.

Goldfinch Class wowed us with their performance and amazing artwork to show the harvest rainbow.

The Toucans used their music lessons to provide us with an insight into harvest in Africa by playing a call and response on the djembe drums.

Teal Class performed a harvest rap which included lines from a traditional harvest song but gave it a modern twist while the Hummingbirds spoke with confidence and flare using the letters from the word Harvest to remind us that it is a fantastic time to share with others.

Collective Worship representative Florence said "We donate food to help others because harvest is a time for sharing. In church we shared things other than food including our God Given Talents."

We also asked our parents and carers to reflect on our Harvest worship. You can see a couple of their responses below along with the phenomenal amount of food which was donated by our families this year.

  • Sci-fest at Colsterworth

    Wed 05 Oct 2022

An exciting afternoon of science and circus happened for the whole school today. Linked to the Bourne Sci-fest Week, Dr Ken came with armfuls of juggling equipment, unicycle and science paraphernalia to give a show about forces. We learned lots and consolidated our understanding of gravity, gyroscopic forces and equal and opposite reactions all through the fun of circus tricks.

  • Wonderful Woolsthorpe Manor

    Tue 04 Oct 2022

On Tuesday 4th October, the Goldfinch class were invited to the inspiring Woolsthorpe Manor to travel back into time to learn all about the inspirational Isaac Newton.

The warm autumn sun was shining and the children had the most magnificent day taking the role of an historian, scientist and an artist.

Our learning adventure began with a thought-provoking tour of the beautiful house. The children used their history skills to make observations, ask questions and make comparisons between life today and in the past.

The next activity we learnt about Newton the scientist and had tremendous fun in the science discovery centre where the children enjoyed the interactive science experiments.

After a quick bite to eat for lunch we took a stroll in the stunning grounds. We spotted the world-famous apple tree and we all choose an Isaac Newton apple to take home.

Wow! What an amazing experience celebrating the life and legacy of Isaac Newton an experience the children will remember for a very long time.
