  • Exciting times for Year 2...

    Wed 05 Dec 2018

    A Special Visitor!

Eve the bunny came to visit us in Nightingale class to enhance our Science learning. We compared the differences between a wild rabbit and a pet rabbit. We discussed the habitat of a rabbit, what they need to survive, how they obtain their food, how the seasons affect them and whether they are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We also did a bit of PSHE discussing how we can all be responsible pet owners. We explored how big a rabbit hutch should be, how many ‘treats’ a rabbit is allowed each day and how they like a companion to keep them happy! Of course we all had a little cuddle and a stroke. She even did a binky! A binky is a really big hop in the air and shows a rabbit is happy. She loved coming to see Nightingale class… she may be back!

    Reading Workshops

What a fantastic turn out to the Reading Workshops. A parent/carer could come into school with their child and share some special learning time together. We heard all about how important it is to learn to read and to be read to. The grownups and children took it into turns to share a story together, picked by the child! After that, we explored some reading techniques and exciting activities to help us get excited about reading. This included boxing up, ‘reading’ a picture on Pobble 365 and some tricky inference work. Each week some reading homework is sent home to be completed together.

    Reading Raffle

What a brilliant start to our reading raffle! If the children read at home three times a week, they get entered into a raffle. If their name is pulled out of the hat, they win a book… to keep! Well done to Taylor who chose a festive story about Paddington Bear.

We wish them every success and are sure they will do an amazing job.

  • Jumanji adventure at Colsterworth!

    Wed 05 Dec 2018

    Welcome to the Jungle!

Herds of elephants, friendly gorillas, deadly snakes – this all sounds a little like something from the rainforest. Well not for the pupils of Colsterworth Primary School it’s not.

On the morning of Tuesday 18th September, the pupils from our school were tasked with investigating some very unusual goings on in the school hall.

The children’s teachers, who had been playing what they thought was an innocent game over the weekend, had unknowingly unleashed the jungle and its inhabitants into the school and it was the children’s job to find out exactly what had happened.

There were vines parading from every alcove and corner, drums mysteriously drumming and animals watching the pupils’ closely as the children worked their way around the jungle formally known to them as their school hall!

Following the experience, the children then returned to their classrooms and wrote about their experiences, imagining what might have happened there over the weekend. Mrs Moore, Chief Executive Officer said ‘It was amazing watching the children’s eyes light up during the experience and the writing which they have produced has been excellent – a fantastic start to the year.’

Fortunately, the school’s teachers managed to repair the damage caused by the mischievous animals and returned the school to normal. We also reassured our younger children that the gorilla running round school was in fact our mild mannered caretaker, Mr Mitchell!

  • Diwali Day

    Wed 05 Dec 2018

On 20th November we had a whole school Diwali day with Sunita. She started the day with an assembly about Rama and Sita. We enjoyed doing actions in the story and we were glad it had a happy ending. Hanuman, the monkey god helped Rama and Sita to defeat Ravana.

Our school has amazing iPads and we used them to make a PicCollage of the story. We also learnt about Hindu gods and good over evil.

Year 3 we had fun making Rangoli patterns. They are used to decorate their homes and walls to welcome guests to their celebrations. We also enjoyed making Diva lamps because Hindus are reminded of the lights that guided Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman back.

Reception class tasted Indian foods and wrote descriptions using their senses, dressed in clothing, danced with Sunita and learned the story of Rama and Sita.

  • Democracy Day

    Wed 05 Dec 2018

What a very exciting time it is in school at the moment! Not only are the children incredibly enthusiastic about their new learning in class, but they are also being given the opportunity to learn all about the British Value of Democracy and how it affects the way we live in modern Britain.

Friday 21st September was Democracy Day at Colsterworth CE Primary School, and several children put themselves forward for election as Student Councillors from Y1 to Y6. They made amazing, heart-felt pitches to their fellow pupils, and canvassed for votes from their classmates. UNICEF Article 12 states that every child should have their opinion heard, and so everyone was given the opportunity to vote for which child would best represent them as a Student Councillor. They were given a polling card, which they then exchanged for a ballot paper to cast their vote.

Mrs Moore, Chief Executive Officer said ‘ I would like to take this opportunity to say a huge well done to all children who so bravely put themselves forward for election – you have all worked extremely hard, and the decision about who to vote for was, I know, very difficult’. The results were announced in a special assembly on Monday 24th September, where the children received their new badges and were officially sworn in as Student Councillors.

The Student Council will be led by Class Teacher Mrs Helliwell, who also made sure we had an exciting British Values Democracy day last Friday. We are sure you can look forward to future Student Council news.
