  • Three Years on Top: Colsterworth Shines at Performing Arts Festival

    Fri 27 Feb 2026

The Colsterworth Festival of Performing Arts proved to be another outstanding occasion for our school, filled with achievement and celebration. We were delighted to return home with two trophies, a joint first, and the Growler Shield for Best Overall Performance for the third consecutive year.

The children approached every element of the festival with focus and determination. Their preparation was evident throughout, from their careful delivery of words and harmonies to the confidence they showed in presenting themselves as a unified group.

Our Year 6 Jaguar Class opened the programme with a thoughtful and courageous presentation. Singing both individually and in small groups, they showcased an arrangement they had developed themselves, drawing on their recent learning in music. Their performance of ‘The Wellerman’ provided a rousing start to the day.

The momentum continued with our Key Stage 2 performers, whose energy and concentration made a strong impact in the beautiful setting of St John’s Church, Grantham. The adjudicator highlighted their performance as “…a magical moment where seventy-seven voices sounded like one” securing the Growler Shield for the day’s best performance.

Taking part in the festival alongside other schools offered the children a valuable opportunity to experience a wide variety of musical styles and to appreciate the richness of live performance.

We would like to thank the Colsterworth Festival Committee for hosting the event, Mrs Bidwell from the Lincolnshire Music Service for her work with Year 6 on their performance, and Mrs Dawes for her continued leadership of singing within our school. Their combined efforts contributed significantly to a smooth and successful day for all involved.

  • In Sixteen Hundred and Sixty Six

    Wed 11 Feb 2026

Year 2 delivered a fantastic assembly all about the Great Fire of London, confidently retelling the dramatic events of 1666. Through a wonderful combination of singing, dancing, storytelling and acting, the children brought this important moment in history to life for their audience.

They shared key facts about how the fire started in Thomas Farriner’s bakery on Pudding Lane, how it spread quickly through the wooden houses, and how it finally came to an end. Their clear narration, expressive acting and enthusiastic singing showed just how much they have learned during their topic.

We were especially proud of the teamwork, compassion and friendship shown throughout the preparation and performance. The children supported one another brilliantly, demonstrating growing confidence and resilience on stage. It was a truly memorable celebration of their hard work and collaboration.

The Leopard Class have begun their new narrative unit with an exciting and immersive drama hook inspired by Sammy the Street Dog. Using drama techniques such as hot-seating and freeze frames, the children explored key moments from the story, focusing on how Sammy may have felt as he tried to escape the raging Great Fire of London in 1666.

Through speaking and acting in role, pupils were encouraged to use emotive language to describe fear, confusion, hope and determination. These activities helped the children to deepen their understanding of character, setting and historical context, while generating powerful vocabulary and ideas to support their narrative writing.

The drama work also provided opportunities to reflect on our Christian values, particularly compassion and courage. The children considered how people and animals might have helped one another during the fire, showing kindness in times of danger, and how bravery can be found even in the most frightening situations. This thoughtful exploration has inspired the class and created a strong foundation for the narratives they will continue to develop throughout the unit.
