Remember Remember

We have delivered our annual firework safety worship this afternoon to the children from Years 1 to 6.

Mrs Moore and Mrs Jordan reminded the children about the history of Bonfire Night and about the Firework Code. Some of our children then had the chance to show us, wearing gloves and under adult supervision, how to safely use a sparkler.

In 1605, a group of Catholics plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London with King James I inside and take control of the country. The leader of the plot was Robert Catesby and the man in charge of lighting the fuse was Guy Fawkes, who put 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar underneath Parliament.

One of the plotters wrote to a friend, Baron Monteagle, to warn him about the plot - the letter reached the King. The Kings' men searched the cellars under Parliament and found Guy Fawkes, dressed in a cloak and hat, with the barrels of gunpowder. He was arrested and tortured until he told the names of the other plotters.

Robert Catesby and several others were found guilty and sentenced to death. the Plot had failed.

Soon afterwards, bonfires and fireworks were lit every 5th November and still happen today.
