Today marks the 80th anniversary of VE Day, a momentous occasion commemorating the end of World War II in Europe. Across the country, communities have come together to honour those who served and sacrificed for freedom.
Within our school community, the day was observed with a special collective worship, incorporating an act of remembrance that brought everyone together in reflection and gratitude. Prayers were shared, inspiring stories highlighted the resilience, courage, and unity that led to victory, and appreciation for past sacrifices resonated throughout the gathering.
A particularly moving moment came as Mrs Dawes played The Last Post on the bugle, a poignant tribute to those who gave their lives for peace. The solemn, echoing notes filled the space, allowing all present to reflect on the significance of the day and the enduring impact of history.
Following the worship, classroom activities encouraged further exploration of the war’s impact. Discussions, creative projects, and storytelling deepened students’ understanding of the sacrifices made for a brighter future, fostering a sense of appreciation for the strength and perseverance shown by past generations.
The celebrations concluded with a joyful gathering, featuring an array of classic treats, including refreshing cucumber slices, colourful cupcakes, and cups of juice—a nod to the spirit of togetherness that defined the war years. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, reflection, and appreciation for the peace and unity forged in the decades since.
As the nation looks back on this landmark event, today’s commemoration serves as a powerful reminder of the strength found in unity and the enduring importance of remembering the past.
